Is there a TOEFL mock test PDF for 2026? What a paper test can and cannot tell you
The free TOEFL 2026 practice test PDFs: where they come from, what is in them, why a PDF cannot score you on the 2026 test, and how to use one well.

The short answer
Yes: ETS publishes two free full-length TOEFL® iBT practice tests for the 2026 format, as PDFs you download from the preparation page after filling in an email form. They are real test items at real length, adapted for paper, with answer keys. They are not a mock test. A PDF has no audio, so Listening and Speaking are printed as text; no clock; no adaptive second part; and no score for Writing or Speaking. Use one to see what the items look like. Use a test on a computer to find out your band.
What is in the official PDFs
Each PDF is one full test, all four sections in test order, with the 2026 task types:
- Reading: Complete the Words paragraphs, Read in Daily Life texts and an academic passage, with questions, as on the test.
- Listening: the recordings are printed as transcripts, with the questions after them.
- Writing: ten Build a Sentence items, an email prompt and an academic discussion prompt.
- Speaking: the Listen and Repeat sentences and the interview questions, printed.
- Answer keys for Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence. The email, the discussion post and the Speaking answers have no key and no score.
The two parts of Reading and Listening are fixed: on paper, the second part cannot depend on how you did on the first.
What a PDF cannot do
The 2026 test changed in exactly the places paper cannot follow.
| On test day | In a PDF |
|---|---|
| Every recording plays once, with no replay | You read the transcript, and can read it again |
| You see a Listening question only after the recording | The question is on the same page as the transcript |
| Your first part decides the second part in Reading and Listening | Both parts are fixed; nothing adapts |
| Every part has a clock, and Listening has one per question | No clock unless you set one |
| Speaking records you a second after the question, with no preparation | You read the question and can think as long as you like |
| Writing and Speaking are scored on a 0 to 5 scale | No score; you judge your own answers |
| A band from 1 to 6 for each section and overall | A count of correct answers in three tasks |
The difference is large in Listening and Speaking. Reading a transcript is a reading test: it is easier than hearing the same words once at a natural pace, and a score from it will be higher than your listening. Reading an interview question and answering when you are ready skips the part of Take an Interview that is hard, starting to speak the moment the question ends.
Old PDFs to avoid
Search results for "TOEFL mock test PDF" are full of tests for the old TOEFL: long reading passages with 10 questions each, five-minute lectures, an integrated essay, four Speaking tasks with preparation time, scores out of 30. Anything that predates January 21, 2026 is a different test. Two checks take ten seconds: look for Build a Sentence and Take an Interview in the contents. If either is missing, the PDF is out of date. Our guide to what changed in 2026 lists the old tasks and the new.
Avoid scans of commercial books passed around as PDFs too. Apart from the copyright, they are often old editions, and the answer keys are frequently missing or wrong.
How to use a PDF well
- Do Reading on the clock. About 30 minutes for the whole section, with a timer you cannot see. Mark it with the key.
- Have someone read the Listening transcripts to you, once, at a natural pace, without you seeing the page. Then answer. It is not the test's voices or accents, but it is far closer than reading.
- Time Build a Sentence: ten items in six minutes.
- Type the email and the discussion post, on a computer, with no spell check, in 7 and 10 minutes. Handwriting changes the speed and the length.
- Record your Speaking answers on your phone. For Listen and Repeat, have someone read each sentence once and repeat it straight away. For the interview, start the moment the question has been read, and stop at 45 seconds. Listen back and count the seconds of silence.
- Mark what you can, and do not convert the result into a band. A count of correct answers from a paper test with transcripts does not predict a band on the computer test.
Is there a free TOEFL 2026 practice test PDF?
Yes. ETS has two free full-length practice tests for the 2026 format, downloadable after an email form on its preparation page.
Can I get a TOEFL score from a PDF practice test?
Not a band. You can mark Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence with the key, but the paper version has no adaptive parts, no audio and no scoring for Writing or Speaking, so the count does not convert to the 1 to 6 scale.
Is the TOEFL taken on paper?
No. The TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer, at a test center or at home. The only TOEFL test that schools still run on paper is the TOEFL ITP, which is a different test with a different use. Our guide to the TOEFL tests compared explains the difference.
Do the PDFs have audio?
No. Listening and Speaking are printed as text. ETS's scored online practice test, TOEFL Practice Online, has the audio and costs US$49 for one attempt.
Take the test the PDF cannot give you
The PDF shows you the items; the band comes from taking them the way the test runs. A Skorway mock is the full 2026 test on a computer: Listening recordings played once with real voices, the clock on every part, an easier or harder second part chosen by your first, and Speaking recorded through your microphone the moment each question ends. Your email and discussion post are scored twice, independently, and your Speaking answers come back with what we heard and a band for each criterion. A few minutes after you finish you have a band from 1 to 6 for every section and overall, with the old 0 to 120 total and your CEFR level. Our guide to what a mock test should include has the full checklist. To see the items on screen first, with the audio a PDF cannot give you, the free Test Tour is the whole 2026 test at your own pace.
Correct for the TOEFL iBT as it runs on November 7, 2026.
