How are my answers scored?

Different tasks are scored in different ways:

  • Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence are marked automatically.
  • Listen and Repeat is transcribed, then scored by comparing the words heard with the sentence.
  • Take an Interview, Write an Email and Academic Discussion are scored by AI (Claude) against Skorway's rubric. Speaking answers are transcribed first.

For the AI-scored tasks, every answer is scored twice, independently. If the two scores differ by more than half a band, a third pass is made. The median of the scores is the one that counts.

Each part counts as much as it does on the real test, following ETS's 2026 test specifications. In Speaking, every answer counts the same, so the seven Listen and Repeat sentences make up about two thirds of your band and the four interview answers about one third. In Writing, the ten Build a Sentence items make up half of your band, and the email and the academic discussion a quarter each.

Bands run from 1 to 6 in half steps. Your report is usually ready a couple of minutes after the mock ends.

If you disagree with a Speaking or Writing band, choose Ask for a re-score on its feedback page, and a person will review it. You can read more about how close our bands are to real results on Accuracy.
